E.J. Bellocq • Storyville Portrait Series
This photograph was taken by E.J. Bellocq. Bellocq was a professional photographer working in New Orleans around the turn of the 20th century. The Storyville Portrait Series is comprised of photographs of prostitutes from legal brothels. Some of the photographs are clothed women and others are nudes.
I chose this photograph because of how sassy she looks. When scrolling down a page of his Bellocq’s photographs this one caught my eye. The geometric shapes, which he probably wasn’t looking for at the time, kept me looking through this photograph. The composition is also a very interesting part of this photo. When looking at other Storyville Portraits, the wall in the background is usually plain. This room is activated by the pictures and pictures frame hung on the back wall. This photograph is very interesting and a little part of history as well.
